Behind the Music
Michael and Leslie Kohn founded The GOLD COAST ORCHESTRA a decade ago as a band that performed at the tri-state area's top clubs and casinos. Demand for the group to perform at weddings, corporate functions and other events led to an expansion of the band to include some of the top players in the New York area.
"The name itself conjures images of the timeless sophistication and class of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby," Leslie said.
Michael and Leslie studied music at NYU, as well as with some of the top private instructors in Manhattan. After making the proverbial "beautiful music together" for several years, the couple married and are raising two young children on Long Island.
Michael, the group's drummer and leader, played his first professional wedding gig at the age of 13 with his father's acclaimed band, The Joe Kane Orchestra. He has performed with a diversified myriad of groups ever since, in venues ranging from CBGB to the Cipriani and the Plaza Hotel, and also leads the reggae-calypso band HIGH TIDE.
His lifetime of experience is utilized leading every GOLD COAST ORCHESTRA performance, working with the host and caterer of each party with professionalism and expertise to assure that each event is a truly unique and exceptional experience.
"It is an honor and privilege to work with our clients to provide the ultimate soundtrack for celebrating their life's most special occasions," Michael said.
He also publishes the Tower Times newspaper at North Shore Towers and is a freelance writer, whose work has been published in national music magazines.
Leslie has performed in a variety of musical theater productions and is also a music and theater teacher at NYC's prestigious Scholars' Academy.
